PHUMEZA MLUNGWANA
SCI Fellow and Former General Secretary of Social Justice Coalition
Phumeza is a social activist - born and raised in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. She has been involved with the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) for a number of years. She has helped to build the organization into a social movement of poor and working-class people. Under her leadership SJC has undertaken a variety of strategies and tactics including advocacy, litigation, political education, and organizing. Thus, it has become one of the leading organizations in South Africa advocating for poor communities and tackling issues of policing, safety, and the criminal justice system. Phumeza, based on her own experience, believes that there needs to be more study of and reflection on transformative change processes and on the challenges that leaders and activists face in building mass movements. Currently studying towards an Mphil at the University of Cape Town, she also serves as a trustee on two boards and as a Social Change Initiative Fellow.
