Signatory Northern Ireland Good Friday Peace Agreement
Monica co-founded the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition political party, which played a pivotal role in the peace process. She was elected a delegate to the Multi-Party Peace Negotiations and then to serve as a member of the Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly. She is a signatory of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement and chaired the Implementation Committee on Human Rights on behalf of the British and Irish governments. She was the Oversight Commissioner for prison reform in Northern Ireland and the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. Monica delivered advice on a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland to the UK government as mandated by the peace agreement. She is a role model for peace-builders everywhere, training women negotiators in Syria, Colombia and around the world. She received the John F. Kennedy Leadership and Courage Award, is a professor in the Transitional Justice Institute at Ulster University and is a member of the Independent Reporting Commission for the disbandment of paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland.
