GCC Summer Reading With Meaning: Lighting the Fires of Freedom

Continuing on with our Summer Reading With Meaning series, Global Citizens Circle recommends “Lighting the Fires of Freedom” by Janet Dewart Bell as your next read. You may remember Bell as one of our discussion leaders in October 2021 for our Circle on Critical Race Theory. The widow of the iconic Derrick Bell, recognized for his work in developing critical race theory, she is also widely known for her work as a social justice advocate, activist, executive coach, motivational speaker, communications strategist and management consultant.

This book, “Lighting the Fires of Freedom,” has received vast acclaim, as the winner of the Studs and Ida Terkel Prize, recommended by The New York Times, The Washington Post, Book Riot and Autostraddle, and was nominated for a 2019 NAACP Image Award, noted as a groundbreaking collection of profiles of African American women leaders in the 20th-century fight for civil rights.
