The Global Citizens Circle family has grown to more than 200 South Africans. The Circle considers it vital to keep the world aware of all who gave their lives for the freedom of South Africa. Oliver Tambo and Johnny Makatini counted on those they nurtured to continue their work and build a new South Africa. Thabo Mbeki, now president of the Republic of South Africa, has been true to those who led the way, as have our two previous recipients of this award: Adelaide Tambo and Leah Tutu, whose faith and courage on the homefront shone as a sustaining light guiding families during their country's darkest hours.
