The Oliver Tambo/Johnny Makatini Freedom Award

May 24, 2000 • Atlanta, Georgia

On the occasion of Goodworks International and the Corporate Council on Africa tribute to Thabo Mbeki

Award Recipient

Thabo Mbeki

Thabo Mbeki, president of the Republic of South Africa

Presented to Thabo Mbeki in the name of the countless, courageous individuals who gave their lives so that South Africa might have new life -- who stood strong in exile, witnessing to the world against apartheid; who stands strong now in his beloved South Africa, leading his people into the new millennium.

The great lesson of things that have happened over these last decades is that, if we have a clear vision of what we want to do together, we say there is a real genuine challenge of poverty, for our country as well as the USA -do something about it! If we continue to demonstrate what I have already seen from the South African delegation here in the United States, to demonstrate this passion, to be together to deal with these issues...and work together as we've worked before to deal with major challenges-
I think we will overcome!
--Thabo Mbeki
